In 2007 the United States Federal Government passed a national pool and spa safety act, called the VGB Act to reduce any likelihood of human (limb) entrapment and drowning in public and private swimming pools.
The Federal Government is enforcing this law and will fine or close any pool that does not comply with these statutes.
Apart from the Federal Government requirements, the state of Florida has recently (July 2011) passed a law, which mimics the VGB requirements. The Florida Legislature is thus asking all commercial/public pool owners and property managers to update their pool suction systems – to those that comply with the requirements set forth by the Florida Legislature, in order to reduce any human (limb) entrapment due to direct suction.
